Arrhythmias

Arrhythmias (or dysrhythmias) are problems that affect the electrical system of the heart muscle, producing abnormal heart rhythms. They can cause the heart to pump less effectively. An arrhythmia occurs: (1) when the heart's natural pacemaker develops an abnormal rate or rhythm (2) when the normal conduction pathway is interrupted (3) when another part of the heart takes over as pacemaker.

Will there be days that I dont feal any heart flip flops?

jeantodd......irregular heart beats are harmless in a healthy heart....I have them all day long. But you have to be sure your heart is healthy. If you have a long history of drinking, you could have a myopathy, or weak heart, from that. I hope you have this checked by an echocardiogram...it is a quick, painless, and fairly cheap test. Sue

Went to family Doc. today. He told me to split my metropolil in half and take it twice daily instead of once. And stop drinking entirely(even tho I am down to one or two drinks a day) and see him in a week.No tests ordered.Ifeel like @#$%.so I'll wait another week.I guess.

Thanks...I wonder why he wants to see you in a week. Maybe you did get him at his lunch hour. Did you ask him about an echo? Maybe you need to be on an antidepressant to help your mood and to replace alcohol. Hang in there. :) Sue

I did call him later that day to find out what my throid test came out to.I was in his office till 12:10 and called him at 1:30 and was told they leave at noon on thursdays....so yeah I was in on his heading home time...I think he blew me out.I asked about echo like you been saying to people...he said we'll see in a week. Then he mentioned maybe halter and seeing cardiologist.I kinda wish we could of at least found out what type of arrythmias I was having before waiting another whole week to start any thing. He did tell me to quit drinking.I told him I was down to 1 drink a day.He said stop all together.

Way to go, jeanntodd! Personally, I think you need a cardiologist, at least for your own peace of mind. Take care. Sue

Sue,I could use your help as I wait to see doc again.I am really struggling here with this heart skipping thing.I took my pulse while it happened and it was like the pulse stopped which causes me to gasp a little.so its like a skip 0r pause.my question is do you know what, most likely, that kind of arrythmia is?todd

Hi Todd.....if is probably a premature ventricular contraction, which is just an early beat....and the pause you feel is called a compensatory pause.....it takes time for the next beat to generate.....thses are very common. I get them all the time.....often a dozen in a row. Let us know what the doctor says. Meanwhile, I suggest you stop taking your pulse....it will drive you nuts. Sue

Wore monitor last week and went to cardiologist yesterday. It's PVC's.I only had 61 of them when I wore the moniter and I haven't had any for almost a week.I told that to cardiologist and he doesn't want to do any more tests...he said if they return bad we will do an echo but he is confident they are harmless blips. Thanks Sue for explaining the harmlessness to me as I waited the almost three weeks to find out what it was. That really helped me not to over worry...although I was stressin. You guys make me want to cry. Thanks for the welcome backs. I can't tell you how relieved I was when I could suddenly access my 2 fave sites again. It's incredible the attachment you feel to people who have been through a lot with you. Also the bond between people - even continents away - who suffer what you are suffering is a powerful thing. I'ts always so easy to tell people who "get it" about how you feel as opposed to healthy people who have not got the slightest idea of how you really feel, especially if you are feeling something scary. I tend not to say anything at all even if I'm about to faint cause I've gone into heart block. Admittedly I should not do this but who wants to hear moaning and groaning from someone all day long? So I'm back and can share my fears, concerns, experiences, and hopefully some laughs with all of you again!!

Off to bed for now, but will be back soon soon. Till then be well and happy everyone.

Not sure I am in the right place for this question but here goes: Warfarin replacement drug, most postings are from 2009? Anything new on any replacement drug?

Cheers,

Gretta

My husband is having an ICD/pacemaker put in on Aug 4th. I asked the surgeon if he would need to go on blood thinners and he said 'no'. Is everyone on one after an ICD implant?

mroussy: no replacement that I know of yet. My mother was just recently hospitalized and was released with a long term to permanant Rx for wafarin.

Gretta: Not everyone is prescribed the wafarin. I was asked to start the medicine and be in a clinical test. It was stated to me as an option as I understood. My local doctor was all a flutter about my refusal. (I will not do daily dose aspirin either.) I figure with quarterly checks that they will be able to tell me when I MUST take this medicine. I do enough to keep chemical companies in business.
