August 9 BIG DAY!

Finally got auth from insurance for ICD. I have to admit I am a little nervous not so much for the actual surgery (I'm an old hand at that). I'm concerned about the recovery & all the things I've read in here. If anyone could give me worst case scenerio I'd appreciate it. I have alot of support from my family which really helps but I do have my 3y/o grand daughter I take care of & I'm worried something could happen while I'm alone with her. What's the "normal" recovery time? Like someone said in another post, doc's seem to forget we are humans not just patients & scared one's at that. I figured I'd get more info here & it's much easier than trying to get ahold of the doc once you've left the office. My cardiologist is not doing the implant his partner is & he wasn't in yesterday, I did meet him a few weeks ago when all of this started but I haven't seen him since.

Good for you!

You will be in and out of the hospital before you know it!

I think your biggest problem is going to be the restriction of lifting your arms above shoulder height as well as the amount of weight you are able to lift. You are not going to be able to pick your granddaughter up. At three years old though, she should be able to climb up into your lap.

Make sure one family member is designated as the information gatherer. Someone who is level headed and factual would be best. If 15 different family members ask questions, then 15 different answers are given.

Good luck, I will keep you in my prayers for your successful procedure.

I had my ICD put in about 3 month ago. Recovery in hospital was two days, and at home three weeks. Just now at the three month time I can raise my arms above my head. I feel a little tight around the area of the implant and left shoulder. But everything should be OK beside these small inconveniences. For more information check out the web page for the ICD.

Payazo, good luck with your ICD. I hope it is making you feel better. Now if they could just come up with a device that takes the knot out of my stomach. :)

I've had a two lead pacer inserted, same procedure. I'm sorry to say that you will be told not to pick up your grandchild for at least, I think a couple of weeks. You might explain to her that gentle hugs are in order. Your chest will be sore. My biggest issue was a week of sponge baths. You shouldn't raise your arm for about a week, as I remember, above your chest, and don't pick up anything more than five or ten pounds. After the wires are secure, usually a couple of weeks, you will be an energizer bunny. I know you will love your pacer. Do get help with your grandgirl for the first couple of weeks, however.

fibrat, I have thought about the valium thing. I may check with my doc.

Nwcoaster, I think that my husband will feel better once he gets his pacer in also. I guess it is just fear of the unknown and not knowing what to expect. But everyone here has been so helpful in that area. And of course there are other concerns like $$$, and our elderly parents that need help also. But I'm sure that everything will work out just fine. We just take it one day at a time! Take care everyone!

Thank you all for the info & most of all your thoughts & prayers. Gretta back at ya on 8/4, the valium sounds like a really good idea at least some peppermint tea or the likes. Payazo it's great to hear you're doing so well, I hope mine does the same. I have been trying to talk to my granddaughter & I have plenty of scars to show her what will be happening also trying to keep her from jumping up on me so maybe she'll be trained by then (sounds like I'm training a dog). Again thank you all & I'll let you all know the outcome. Looking forward to hearing how you & your husband do Gretta.
