 | "Retarded/skipped" beats after ablation

In July of 09, I had an ablation to correct sporadic atrial fibs. Ironically, I never had an a-fib during exercise over the 25 years I've been suffering from a-fibs.
Since the procedure, I have had several episodes of what I call "retarded" beats whenever the adrenaline gets pumping(namely running). They are not like my old a-fibs with the heart beating a mile a minute but more like normal sinus rhythm and suddenly there is a delay and I "miss" a beat. No episode has gone on for more than a couple of hours, far below the 20-something hours my a-fibs would go on for. My cardiologist is ordering a monitor for me to wear, not a 24 hour halter monitor but one I just have to wear as often as possible. He hasn't said if these "retarded beat" episodes is something to be concerned about and has told me to continue my normal activities.
Was wondering if anyone has experienced this kind of "skipping" and what it could mean, etc. Thanks.

hmmm....they might be PVCs, or premature ventricular contractions, which are just early beats from the ventricle followed by a pause. There is no way to know what they are except by catching them on a monitor. I wore one of those for a month.....I have one suggestion regarding the leads...they can really irritate your skin, so be sure to change the location slightly each time you apply them. I mentioned PVCs because I have frequent episodes of them when I am exercising....they are harmless in a healthy heart. Keep us posted. Good luck. Sue

Funny you should mention a monitor. My cardiologist just gave me one of those smaller monitors to be worn for two weeks. Ironically, no skipped beats after the first week. But will keep you posted. And yes, moving the leads a bit has been a good idea.

After visiting the cardiologist, seems like I am stuck with PAC's(atrial), not the PVC. Alas, it is somewhat uncomfortable but nothing to be concerned with. His takes are:
1) The heart may be trying to go into a-fib but the ablation is preventing it so I get the PAC instead.
2) Ablations for PAC are possible but not as easy to fix hence that option would not be looked at for awhile.
3) I am definitely not in a-fib which is good. It is sinus rhythm with skipped beats.
4) Haven't changed my exercise habits. I guess that is okay. I ref youth soccer for most of my activity.
Any other info is appreciated. Thanks.

This is great news.....these are just harmless little blips.....think of them as small "burps"....nothing to worry about. Enjoy your soccer games....Happy New Year!

Just an update that since my ablation, my PAC's seem to really flare up at night. Causes me some problems sleeping straight through and it is getting irritating. Talked to a lady who works in a cardiologist office and she says many other say the same thing-nighttime is the worst. Am scheduled to see my doc for a "standard" appt. in June. Am hesitant to take propefanone since the reason I had the ablation was to NOT take propefanone.
IF anyone has some insight into why night is the worse or some sort of solution so I can sleep straight through, let me know. Still, no true a-fib since the ablation last July so at least that's good.

Kennesi , I have had many episodes , of my heart stopping , and starting back on it's own , skipped beats , A-fibs .ect .
I lost my home to fire , last year , and wore a monitor , for a month , which filled the 'episode ' bank the first hour of the day . Extreme physical labor , dragging barrels , Passing out , and comming 'to ' daily , Nite was extremely bad , and was told , The change up , from day time heart load , to nite time heart ' load , was showing palpitations , ect . activity , was highest , as heart was making adjustment , to demands , ( daytime hard labor ) nitetime less workload for heart . I just figured it was part of the price i was paying , for trying to do what I was doing . Was long way from bedrest .

I'd have to say I just have good days and bad days with my ectopics (PAC's and PVC's) and atrial tachy. Even on the so-called good days I still feel them a lot more at bedtime. Probably because I'm not distracted. Also by bedtime I have some fluid issues and bloat so in general my heart seems to be pounding more. After I go to the bathroom a few times, it feels better. And again, some days are better than others depending on how I've been eating. tsk, tsk

are you finally admitting that you could possibly have fluid issues? :)
Seriously, I had the same thing today and last night, and I broke down and did a good dose of lasix....so far, it is a bit better.
Kenesi.that is super about your sucessful ablation.....stay positive. Pacs are harmless....
what blows my mind is heart rates of over 240 at 2am.....in my sleep....II almost never even wake up.

Thanks for the feedback. Good point about how not being occupied at night exaggerates what I might not notice during the day. Ambien anyone? Sue, you are right(I think women are always right, aren't they?)- Much better to live with the PAC's than a-fibs where I get zero sleep!! Thanks again.

ambien, yes....just stay in bed after you swallow it( or you will do things that you will not remember.....some can be very wild and crazy)....the smallest dose you need is best.
