Defibrillator Leads - healing

posted by hgarya on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 13:54

All things considered equal, what is the normal range of time for the "healing" of defibrillator lead contact (in the heart)to take place....from implant, to "it's safe to drive a car", to .... "let's start swinging the golf club".....(Sue?)

I was told 2 weeks for the arm to be down....in Florida , you can drive a car after 1 month, I think, but that would be hard to enforce. I think all states have different laws. I would check with your doctor about the golf swing. Personally, I would wait a month to do anything too wild....just to have peace of mind. I hope this helped.

I had a Medtronic pacer and had to wait 2 weeks as Sue stated. But for me,there was no lifting for a month.I ended up with a St.Jude ICD and the same followed,2 weeks and ect.It took me close to 3 months to drive and reason was I needed to.I was tooooooo affraid to.What didn't help was, about a week after getting my ICD that it went off 3 times within 30 sec.about a year later,I had to go in because one of my lead's from the medtronic had broken off. They were able to use the Medtronic pacer leads.

Thank you both for the responses. In Florida...a whole month? Maybe they want you to spend more time on the beach! I like that. I have an office job, so lifting isn't a major issue. However, implant Monday last week and off all week from work. I'm at home this week, planning to return on next Monay. I was beginning to feel a "little" bad about not being at work, but...my nurse yesterday said that I shouldn't because...well, at MY age (62), healing is slower. I didn't argue. I'm getting to spend some time on the internet and, so, I found this site. Great! I did have some "hiccups" (under the heart) on Tues of this week - cardilogist/medtronic tech adjusted some voltage; said that my issue was "positional"....slouching in the chair positioned the lead just right to set off a nerve. Seems okay now.
